Russia instigated a war by invading Ukraine. Driving out a hostile force, that force ceasing combat operations, and the belligerent nation formally surrendering and returning captured land is generally referred to as defeating them, at least that’s my understanding of it. Do you have some other understanding of what is meant by “defeating Russia”?
They want a ‘negotiated peace’ in which Ukraine is oh-so-generously allowed by Russia to keep whatever territory is not currently occupied. See? Defending Ukraine without defeating Russia! That mass ethnic cleansing will and has been going on in the occupied territories doesn’t matter to them - just consider Russia’s Legitimate Security Concerns™
