  • It’s a reference to spam callers. For a few years, right around when everyone was realizing they shouldn’t answer the phone for unknown callers, it was really common to get calls that, if you picked up, would play a pre-recorded message along the lines of “Hello! We’ve been trying to get in touch with you regarding your car’s extended warranty. You may be entitled to money and blowjobs, and if your warranty expires, your hair will fall out and your car will be repossessed. To speak to a representative, press 1. Por habla Esperanto, marqué νούμερο 二.”

If you pressed 1, you would ostensibly be connected to a high-pressure sales rep trying to sell you a worthless maintenance contract. Nobody is really certain, though, because despite hundreds of millions of people receiving twelve of these calls each day, not one person every stayed on the line longer than “regarding…” In fact, my memory on the end of that message might be a fabrication, because I don’t think I ever heard it.

  • Imagine a hammer. This is a special hammer. It has the latest technology, which allows it to assist you hitting the nail. It can zero in on the nail, and nudge your swing to precisely strike on the optimal nail head.

But it’s still a hammer. You don’t always aim to strike a nail. Sometimes it’s removing a nail, sometimes it’s hammering something else.

That would be incredibly frustrating if every time you tried to use it, the hammer would jostle about in your hand looking for a nail head.

Now imagine that the nail manufacturers have started paying the hammer manufacturer to “prefer” their nails. Maybe those are the nails you need, maybe they aren’t, but the hammer jitters and jostles in your hand unless you’re using the brand that is paying for preferential treatment.

Somewhere along this path, the hammer has stopped being useful for even its most fundamental purpose. “Improvements” on the tool have created inefficiencies for the user. The underlying technology is good, and can improve the function of the tool, but it is being implemented poorly and the developers are prioritizing profits over functionality.

This anti-pattern repeats frequently across all industries. It has come to search engines and social media now.

  • You know when a young child gets mad about the inherent injustice of bath time, so they pack a suitcase with their stuffed animal and a juice box and tell you they are running away from home? Like, you want to address their concerns, but they have so completely overestimated their own capabilities that you can’t help but feel patronizing. They even made a little model rocket.

Mmmm political left and right don’t align strictly on a union-supporting axis. Even left and right don’t really mean much anymore, because the Conservative party isn’t anchored to a specific set of ideologies the was Progressives are. A conservative will support a union when the union helps rhe conservative, will oppose the union when the union hurts the conservative, and will demonize the union when it helps them get elected by lathering up their base of voters.

Progressives support labor rights, equitable pay, and regulations that protect the safety and liberty of the worker. Progressives will support those ideals even when it does not help them directly.

Many people associate Communists and Socialists with the “left” and Libertarians and Free Market Capitalists with the “right”. But there are conservative communists and progressive capitalists.
