  • people struggle with the concept of federation and picking a server

This is a HUGE reason. I didn’t know when I first signed up for Lemmy that I was on what is essentially a tankie instance. I didn’t know when I signed up for Pixelfed that I wasn’t going to be able to see shit because the first server I signed up for wasn’t really federated with anyone and I’ve mostly given up on it. I still can’t see a bunch of stuff on Mastodon without switching through several accounts with no rhyme or reason.

I’ve said before that I obviously like it here because I’m using the services, but it’s not easy. Most people don’t know about the fediverse, and most of those that do want to be passive about maintaining their social media. Most of the fediverse is built for nerds.

  • Defederation makes it so that figuring out which instance to sign up with in order to see your friends and local businesses (since we’re talking about vs Facebook instead of Twitter or Reddit) would be a nightmare for the average person.

I have multiple accounts on some services trying to get to everything I want to see. I mostly gave up on Pixelfed. My main Mastodon account can see people on other instances but has problems seeing their posts. And I’m absolutely not willing to troubleshoot it because between work, a social life, and other hobbies I just don’t have the time or give a shit.

I like the fediverse. I’m here. I use it. But I’m only going to use what’s convenient and I promise that I have more patience than the average non tech person who wants to sign up using a linked Gmail account and see all the things they expect to see without having to think about it.

Edit: I think my brain skipped the last two sentences in that comment. I just sat here and bitched about something that was already mentioned. I have brought nothing to this discussion and have brought shame upon my house.

  • Some guy played to level 255 and it rolled back to level 0, (that’s the rebirth). Then he played to level 91 after that. To answer an unasked but important question: he did it on a ROM and not a cartridge because it’s pretty damn likely a cartridge would have crashed long before this point. Even on this particular ROM there are a bunch of ways to crash it (there’s loads of them documented).

  • It does. There are some upsides, though. One bonus is that, at least in some small ways, some of these shitbag companies that have acted terribly in the past are letting up because we have options. We don’t have to rely on a couple of big studios for every game we play. So EA has backed off of their terrible launcher.

I also think it’s kind of cool that any schmuck can make their dream come true. I’ve definitely put out a bunch of music that I don’t market, just because I always wanted to do it. Anyone with an idea and a laptop can code up a game. The ridiculous amount of shovelware aside, I think that’s pretty cool.

I just wish there was a better way to sift through the dreck to find the good stuff.
