Unfortunately, of all the horrible things the Nazis have done, anti-lgbt sentiment is probably the only one that might have gotten widespread support from all political spectrum at the time. It’s not like the Allies and rest of the world were progressive and supportive of lgbtq. See what Britain did to one of their own, Alan Turing, for being gay.
A lot of what the Nazis taught had a lot of support at the time: for example, there is a picture of Queen Elizabeth when she was still a child being taught how to make a Nazi salute by her uncle the then King.
The whole idea that some people are born superior to other people and associated things like racism, anti-LGBT beliefs and even Machism were very popular back then in the West, especially amongst the elites (who, naturally, wanted to believe they deserved their inherited priviledge because of being superior people). A lot of that is still alive though frowned upon hence unvoiced.
As a side note an trying not to derrail the thread too much, this is why when Zionists and Israel claims to have “Western Values” most of us in the West don’t recognize it in what they do but they’re not quite lying: the whole etnically uniform state whose majority see themselves as superior and thus act in incredibly racists ways both towards local minorities and other etnicities who they want to exploit or whose resources they want to steal is not quite as much part of present day Western values (well, not openly and to quite so extreme levels, though just look at what the US has done in the Middle East to see the ideas of inherent superiority put into action) but it most definitelly was absolutelly standard in Western thinking back in the early part of the XX century.
Good thing nothing like that will ever happen again

unfortunately that’s not so
Looking at the current meteoric rise of the far right here in Europe I pretty much expect to end up in a concentration camp or murdered by some brownshirt-equivalent within a couple of decades, if my health issues don’t kill me first
RED TRIANGLE! RED TRIANGLE!
I need a Lower Deck gif to compliment that shout.
We should wear our otherness with pride. You can pick one from the link below.

Is it just me or calling Nazis merelly “cretins” actual feels like it’s almost giving them a compliment?
(Not saying it was done on purpose, by the way)
In my mind “cretin” is a far too mild adjective to apply to Nazi so “Nazi cretin” just feels wrong in a really unusual, insuficiency-of-insult, way.
“Dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen”
“Where you burn books, you also end up burning people”
Now I’m wondering what studies on LGBT prior to the 1930s were even like. I doubt it could have been anything useful.
Hmmm… could there perhaps be a reason why you think past studies would have been awful? Could something have perhaps happened to maybe bias you towards thinking everyone in the past had inhumane attitudes? Maybe some sort of series of events ensured that only negative views were allowed to flourish in official institutions?
Hmm a real tickler of the noggin. These hypothetical confuse and confound.
Western, studies, germany. I suppose I might have jumped the gun a bit on this on one.
It’s alright, I’m teasing you because the evidence is literally in the picture but there was a concerted effort to destroy any study that produced results other than “queer people are aberrant and torturing them is good actually”.
Germany before the nazis was extremely progressive in many ways. We can understand the wave of far right support partly as a backlash against progressive concessions won (which, yes, rhymes with something happening now and is exactly as terrifying).
It’s not just Germany where this happened, although it was the worst. Many Nazi policies had enthusiastic support in other countries right up until the Nazis declared war on them (there are no lessons here don’t think about it too hard).
Now people act shocked at the sudden appearance of queer people, especially trans people atm, but there’s only a lack of historical evidence because of concerted extermination campaigns like these book burnings and encouraging HIV/AIDS.
There have always been good, kind, clear-eyed, and compassionate people everywhere. Never let yourself believe the past was exclusively horrible bastards who “didn’t know better”.
